It's so nice to see that you have settled down in NYC. I'm always looking for free things as well. You can catch some events from AMNY or the Onion as well.

i know you have been getting as lot of questions, and it is probably annoying, but i was just wondering if you could give a little more information about the hostel you guys stayed in while searching for a place? i bought my plane tickets last week so my sister and i can fly up to look for an apartment...and so now we just need to find a CHEAP place to stay for a few nights (we have a friend that we might stay with for a night or two, which helps, but we are going to be in nyc for a total of 4 nights).
i have never stayed in a hostel and im pretty sure i would have no problem with it (i have done a lot of research on them lately), but it would really help to hear a little insight from someone who has actually stayed in one lately.
thanks a lot and I LOVE your blog!! thanks for everything you write!

Wow!!! All your stories and pictures are making me so JEALOUS! I'm in Brunswick, OH near Cleveland and every time I go downtown I love it. I can't even IMAGINE living in NYC. I, like many people posting on here, have dreamt about living there for a long time. I've done a little research and it seems like rent is the only really big problem to living there. Other than that you can find everything else fairly normal in price. Thanks for the inspiration guys!!!

I found my way here from your comment on Erica Joy's blog entry on moving to NYC.

I went the alternate route from you guys and prepped my stuff, stored it at a friends, and took a (gulp) one-way flight from Seattle to NYC, intending to find a place and then send for my things.

Since I was looking for only myself (as opposed to a couple), my info/tips are geared more towards the single person...

First, I didn't HAVE to find a place all to myself. Finding a place with roommates has advantages: no broker fees, no excessive hoops of tax info, credit checks, first born, etc. So you're thinking: I don't want to give up the ability to scratch myself wherever, whenever I want. But there are room shares where there's no living room common area! This really diminishes the roommate dynamic so you can really go on being your badass antisocial self!

Second, my standards and expectations quickly changed to meet, oh I dunno, reality. Spaces are small for high prices. Not a shocker there. Be prepared to get not the total square footage of your prospective apartments, but sad little DIMENSIONS like 10' x 10'.

Third, when I plunged head first into NYC, I stayed at a hotel with free wi-fi. TREMENDOUS convenience in my opinion. I could search listings in a controlled, stress-free place. Priceless.

Fourth, during my search, I've come across plenty of temporary rooms for days or weeks that'll beat hotel prices. Apparently, New Yorkers go away all the time for whatever reason and space being the commodity it is, often rent out their rooms during their absence-- a potentially great way to experience NYC without having to endure hostels. (I'm actually transferring to a temporary place myself after my hotel reservation is done because most apartment availabilities don't start until Nov. 1st. [It's Oct.19 as I write this.] The calculated price of the place per night? $33/night. It's a nice, nice place too-- although no bed. But hey, no where in NYC will you find a hotel for $33/night with your own bathroom.)

That's all I can think of for now. Hopefully I'll have been as helpful to someone as the few blogs out there on the subject of moving to NYC were to me.

That's great that you have an apartment. They REALLY are hard to come by for a place so big. I wish there was a massive influx of moving out, but that might not be a good thing...
What neighborhood is your apartment? Those pictures look similar to those on optimal housing.

Hi. Your site is such an inspiration. I'm 22, and in Charlotte, NC. I just graduated college, so I feel like I need to stay in my job here because it pays fairly well...and gain job experience before I even think of a move to somewhere else. I've never even been to NYC, but I've dreamed about it my entire life. I hope to at least visit next year all by myself! It will be hard though, because I'll want to move! It just seems so confusing...especially if you are moving alone. Do I get a job first, place to live first, do I just stay in NC and save tons of money first? Anyway, I'd love to hear more about your job search, apartment search, and the move! Great site!!!!

Yep, Maz and I finally actually made it to New York City. We have been here for about two weeks. So far we love it! This is such an amazing city. We have been so busy with the move and getting settled that we have not had much time to post. We will be posting more articles soon.... and bring everyone up to date on our move!

Hello. Even though I'm only 16 years old, I've already made a mind-set that I am moving to NYC. I'm majoring high school in photography and have a few schools in Manhattan that I plan to look into. I thought about moving to Manhattan but realized thats not the cheapest way AT ALL, but I'd still like to move into Manhattan. I currently live in Sarasota, FL and understand this will be a HUGE move, specially coming from a small city. As neighborhood selection goes, I'm still stuck. I wish I could find a safe neighborhood like the Upper West Side or Greenwich Village(Where one of my possibly future schools is located) with the prices of somewhere like Harlem. As for a roommate I only have one friend interested seriously who is older than me and I've known for about 6 years. Hes already made a move out on his own to a more metropolis area. Any quick help or useful tips? Feel free to email me on that: OverExposures@AOL.com

I also included my photography website. Thanks so much.

Hey me and my boyfriend are moving, driving, end of December. If you want to share in the move and costs drop me an email:) We are in a similar position and totally understand. We have a place there, and work here... but getting the money is very difficult.

If I dont hear from you, then we send you good luck!

Hi Maz

If I can ask, what exactly are you a consultant for? and what about the opportunities for that? What kind of degree/certification do you have?

2 ExMidwest: in what area do you live, and have you already considered moving? I had a talk with some guy today telling me he lived around greenwich village and was paying around 1K$/mnth (with around 35 square meter (yes I'm from europe))

Aw, that really sucks. That's what happened to me. Unfortunately, I didn't have a garage sale, but that's because I don't have much to begin with.
We should definitely stay in touch!

Hi! I am very interested in your blog. This summer I have decided that the summer of 2008 I will be moving to NYC also. Of course finding a job and an apartment will be part of the package. Please continue writing your experiences as I will need lots of advice. Just as you said most people do not really believe I am going to do this haha. I have decided that I need a big change (much like the two of you) and I am confident that NYC is the big change I want and need. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi! Found you on 43things. I like this site. I have one, too. You should also check out escapetonewyork.net. They moved last year, and their entries are interesting.
good luck!
